Despite the now-melting 2 feet of snow on the ground, the unmistakable signs of spring are emerging, bringing much-needed respite from winter weariness. At last we awake to light and leave work to light, rather than dreary darkness. Soon the days of growth and gardening will be here. Meanwhile, it's time for the final days of fireplace logs and hot chocolate.

Not the Saturday morning anyone expected. Not the end to Columbia's mission that anyone imagined. Strange, sad echoes of Challenger 17 years later (has it really been that long?). We are reminded of the awesome mystery and tremendous courage of space travel.
